Gandhi’s security was increased after the first attack
On January 20, a bomb was thrown in an attempt to kill Mahatma Gandhi at Birla House. Fortunately, apart from damaging a wall, this bomb could not cause any major damage. The attacker, Madan Lal Pahwa, was arrested. Patel returned to Delhi from Ahmedabad on January 23. Meanwhile, he had come to know that Madan Lal Pahwa was not alone in trying to kill Mahatma Gandhi. His other companions are absconding.
Patel gave instructions to increase the security of Birla House. Apart from 19 police officers and jawans in uniform, seven policemen in plain dress were deployed. The plain-dress police, armed with revolvers, were instructed to mingle with the crowd so that they could nab the criminal as soon as they sensed a threat.
The deployment of police at every corner of his house had disturbed Ghanshyam Das Birla. Birla had mentioned this to Patel and said that Mahatma Gandhi was also against it. Patel protested by saying that he wanted everyone to be searched before entering Birla House.
On the afternoon of January 23, Patel met Gandhi and asked for permission to search every person who came to meet him or attend the prayer meeting. Gandhi refused. In this meeting, he changed the topic of the conversation by saying that it was important for both Nehru and Patel to remain together in the government. In the coming days, Patel had programs in Agra and Patna. The date for the next meeting between the two was fixed for January 30.

Patel saddened, tried to check Bapu’s pulse by holding his wrist. A doctor sitting next to him informed him that there was nothing now. Patel sat at Gandhi’s feet. Within a few minutes, Jawaharlal Nehru reached there. Sitting on his knees and resting his head on Bapu’s body, he cried like a child. Then he cried while hugging the Sardar. Mahatma Gandhi’s son Devdas kept calling out repeatedly with his mouth in Bapu’s ear, “Bapuji, speak… speak.”
Jayaprakash said Patel should resign
That night, Nehru and Patel, in their address on the radio with choked throats, gave the country shocking and disturbing information about the murder of Bapu Mahatma Gandhi by a Hindu youth. Then Patel did not sleep the whole night. The next day, a sad and tired Patel accompanied Mahatma Gandhi on his funeral truck.
Just before Gandhi’s body was cremated at Rajghat, a sobbing Manu hugged Patel and then wept uncontrollably. Manu felt that Patel had suddenly aged a lot. The Statesman’s report on February 3, which demanded Patel’s resignation, also questioned his ability as home minister, citing his old age.
Socialist leaders demanded Sardar’s resignation and the appointment of a new Home Minister for his failure to protect Bapu Mahatma Gandhi despite having sufficient prior information about the assassination attempts. Jayaprakash Narayan, referring to Sardar’s 74 years of age, said that he was shouldering the burden of a department that was difficult for a 30-year-old youth to handle. In private conversations, Mridula Sarabhai was also repeating similar things.
Patel wrote his resignation
Patel immediately wrote his resignation addressed to Nehru. He reminded me that you had a letter of his resignation even before this. Bapu Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination is an additional reason for my resignation. I do not want to create more trouble for you in this difficult time.
At a time when there is a demand for my resignation from the public that is certainly justified, please help me. Differences between Nehru and Patel were going on even before Gandhi’s assassination. Patel had already sent his resignation to Nehru.
Questions related to this were discussed between the two during their meetings with Mahatma Gandhi on 23 January and 30 January, just before the assassination. On both occasions, Mahatma Gandhi had stopped Sardar from resigning. It was decided that Nehru would also sit together the next day during their meeting on 30 January. But destiny did not provide an opportunity for this.
But then why did Patel not send his resignation?
Jayaprakash Narayan, who demanded Sardar’s resignation after Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, was close to Nehru and was living with him in those days. Mridula Sarabhai was also close to Nehru. Patel understood that Jayaprakash Narayan was sharing Nehru’s thoughts about him and giving voice to it. Even after this second letter of Patel’s resignation was written, it was not sent to Nehru.
Patel’s personal assistant, Vidya Shankar, tried to convince him that destiny had decided this. The Home Ministry cannot be blamed for this. This letter of resignation will give Sardar’s opponents the freedom to act arbitrarily. The country will be deprived of the joint leadership of Nehru and Sardar, which is badly needed at this time. At this point, both Patel and Vidyashankar were failing to understand Nehru. Nehru’s letter of the same day was saying something else.
Nehru wrote that everything changed with Bapu’s death
On the same day when the news of the demand for Patel’s resignation appeared in the newspapers, on 3 February 1948, Nehru wrote to Patel, “Everything has changed with Bapu’s death. We have to face a changed and more difficult world. I am distressed by the whispers and rumours exaggerating the differences between you and me. We have to stop such mischief. In the 25 years we have been together, we have faced many crises and storms. I am saying with all honesty that during this time my affection and respect for you have constantly increased, and it cannot decrease under any circumstances.”
Nehru further wrote that after Bapu, it is my responsibility as well as yours to face crises and challenges together with full loyalty and honesty, not just superficially but with mutual trust as friends and allies. I had thought of a long conversation with you, but now I do not want to wait for it. This letter is a message of my love and friendship towards you.
Patel said we fought together for freedom and will stay together
Patel’s reply to Nehru on 5 February 1948 was giving news of the return of warmth between the two. But a day before that, on 4 February, in a meeting of the Congress in the Constituent Assembly, Patel, for the first time, addressed and accepted Nehru as “My Leader,” demonstrating his loyalty and solidarity towards his leadership. In his speech on this occasion, Patel said, “I am with the Prime Minister on every question of national interest. We have sat together at the feet of our guru Mahatma Gandhi for 25 years.
We have fought together for freedom. It cannot even be imagined that when the Mahatma is not among us today, we will fight among ourselves.” In his letter dated 5 February, Patel wrote about Nehru’s letter dated 3 February that the love and warmth expressed in it touched his heart. We have been together all our lives for the benefit of the country. My meeting with Bapu just before his death and his thoughts also connect us. I assure you that I will carry out my responsibilities with the same spirit.

The verdict has come in the case of the death of accused Suraj in police custody in Himachal Pradesh’s Gudiya case. 8 police personnel, including IG Zahoor Zaidi, have been sentenced to life imprisonment in this case. Along with this, a fine of one lakh rupees has also been imposed on all of them. What is this whole case and how the names of police officers come in this case?
Almost everyone is aware of the much-talked-about Gudiya gang rape and murder case of 2017 in Himachal Pradesh. In this case, the accused, Suraj, of Nepali origin, died in police custody. The special CBI court in Chandigarh heard the case of Suraj’s police custody death on Monday. Then it also pronounced its verdict on this.
The court has sentenced eight policemen, including Himachal Police IG and IPS officer Zahoor Haider Zaidi, HPS officer, and DSP Manoj Joshi, to life imprisonment.
Not only this, but they have also been fined one lakh rupees each. This court decision comes seven and a half years after Suraj’s death. The convicts include IG Zahoor Zaidi, DSP Manoj Joshi, and Kotkhai police station’s then-SHO Rajinder Singh, ASI Deep Chand Sharma, Head Constable Mohan Lal, Surat Singh, Rafi Mohammad, and Constable Ranjit Stata.
On January 18, the court convicted all of them based on witnesses’ statements, evidence, and the parties’ arguments. On the other hand, D.W. Negi, the then SP of Shimla, was acquitted due to a lack of evidence. After that, all these convicts were taken into custody and sent to Burail jail in Chandigarh.
What is the Gudiya murder case?
On July 4, 2017, 16-year-old Gudiya was gang-raped and then killed. The accused had committed this crime in the Tandi forest of Kotkhai. Then they fled, leaving Gudiya’s body naked. At that time, this case was under investigation by the then IG Zahoor Haider Zaidi as chairman. For that, an SIT was formed to investigate this case.
2017: Suraj died
The police soon succeeded in the case. The SIT arrested all seven accused. One of these accused was Suraj of Nepali origin. Suraj died under suspicious circumstances in the custody of Kotkhai police station on 18 July 2017. When the postmortem of the body was done, it was found that Suraj died due to police brutality. The matter received so much attention that, on the orders of the High Court, an investigation of this case was handed over to the CBI.
The CBI found that Suraj was killed in police custody and the policemen had conspired for this. After this, in August 2017, the CBI arrested Zaidi, Joshi, and other policemen. During the investigation and hearing, Zaidi was also accused of threatening witnesses. Due to this, his bail was also cancelled.
IG Zaidi remained in prison for 582 days
IG Zahoor Zaidi was arrested and kept in Kanda Jail in Shimla. He spent 582 days in jail and was granted bail by the Supreme Court in April 2019. However, his trial continued in the court. Zaidi was suspended in August 2017. However, he was reinstated in November 2019. In 2020, the then BJP government suspended Zaidi again. In January 2023, the Congress government reinstated his services. In September 2023, he was also posted in the police department.
What was the decision in the Gudiya case?
Anil alias Neelu, the main accused in the Gudiya gang rape and murder case, has also been sentenced to life imprisonment by the court in the year 2021. In April 2018, the CBI arrested Chirani Neelu. On 28 April 2021, the special court of Shimla had convicted him. Now the decision of the Chandigarh court has come regarding the death of Suraj in police custody.
Waqf Amendment Bill: 14 changes and shock to the opposition… Know who said what

The Joint Parliamentary Committee formed on the Waqf Amendment Bill held a meeting on Monday. The bill was discussed clause-wise. All the amendments brought by the opposition in the meeting were rejected by the majority.
The amendments brought by the members of the ruling party were accepted. The opposition had brought proposals to change 44 clauses of the bill, which were rejected after voting. On the other hand, the ruling party had brought an amendment proposal for 14 changes in 14 clauses of the bill, which was accepted after voting. 16 votes were cast in support of the ruling party’s amendment and 10 against it.
It is worth mentioning that more than 450 amendment notices were given by the members of the ruling party and the opposition. Now by late tonight or tomorrow, the draft report of the committee will be sent to all the members so that they can read it and give any dissent note to include it in the report. So far, the report is more than 500 pages long; the number of pages will increase after the dissent note.
The next meeting of the committee will be held on Wednesday, in which the draft report of the committee will be accepted. The report of the committee will be submitted to the Lok Sabha Speaker on January 31. After the Speaker’s consent, it will be presented in the Parliament.
If the amendments accepted today become law after being passed by the Parliament, then…
1. In the earlier bill, the right to determine whether a property is a Waqf or not was given to the district collector, but the committee has recommended changes to it. Now instead of the Collector, an officer nominated by the State Government will decide it.
2. The definition of waqf by user has been amended. If there is any Waqf property registered before this bill’s implementation, then it will remain a Waqf property. That property may be used as Waqf, but if it is disputed in whole or in part or is a government property, then it will not be considered a Waqf.
3. There was a provision in the bill that there will be two non-Muslim members in the State Waqf Board and Central Waqf Council. Now, by making changes, ex-officio members have been kept out of this. This means that it will be mandatory for two of the nominated members to be non-Muslims. That means now more than two members can also be non-Muslims. That means if any of the ex-officio members is a non-Muslim, then he will not be counted among the non-Muslims. In this way, there can be a maximum of four non-Muslim members.
4. The Chairman and Joint Secretary are ex-officio members. If any of these two is a non-Muslim, then it will not make a difference. It will be mandatory to have two non-Muslims among the nominated members.
5. The new law will not be applicable retrospectively provided that the Waqf property is registered. That is, the registered Waqf properties will not be affected, but the future of those that are not registered will be decided according to the standards set in the bill. Earlier in the bill, it was that whoever donates Waqf property should be following the Muslim religion for five years.
6. Now the definition of practising Muslim has been changed to that whoever has been following the Muslim religion for five years should also be demonstrative that he has been a practicing & demonstrative Muslim for five years. That is, it has to be proved that he has been offering Namaaz, etc. for five years.

But the police did not have any clue or evidence of any kind. Apart from this, the police could not even imagine in their dreams that a husband could do such a thing. Therefore, the police could not arrest Dominic.

Later, during police interrogation, Dominic also confessed to his act. He also said that after giving the medicine, when his wife would fall asleep, he used to do this act. Police came to know from the records of the Health Department that he had bought 450 sleeping pills in a year. Police say that in the investigation so far, it has come to light that 72 sleeping pills were bought with him. Raped 92 times, out of which 51 have been identified.
Age of rapists: 26 to 73 years
