What is the Durand Line?
This development has once again fired up the issue of Durand Line, which has existed since the British era. The Durand Line is a border line drawn between British India and Afghanistan in 1893. It was named after Sir Henry Morris Durand. He served as the Foreign Secretary of British India. Pakistan and Afghanistan have been in dispute over this border for several decades. The Afghan government has never accepted that borderline. Neither did the Taliban. The Pashto claim that the Durand Line is just a line drawn by the British Empire, and they do not accept it as the border of Pakistan.
Conflict over the line between the two countries
After the establishment of Pakistan in 1947, Afghanistan never accepted the Durand Line. Be it the government of Hamid Karzai or the present Taliban government, no one agrees with this line. The Taliban also claims the Pakistani city of Peshawar as its territory. Pakistan had expected that after the Taliban took control in 2021, it would be able to reach an agreement with the Pashto on the Durand Line, but this could not happen. This dispute and conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan is still going on, and tension is increasing on the Durand Line. The Taliban also says that Pakistan is harbouring terrorists of the Islamic State Khorasan Province in its territory, who are staunch enemies of the Pashto. This has made the relations between Pakistan and the Taliban more tense.
